    Design and Studies

A wind tunnel experiment was executed in Tong Ji University. The station has to support strong winds (up to 250 kg/m2) and resist to earthquakes but needs to be free to expand, because of temperature variations (+/- 3 cm at the end of the roof). The cast pieces on the top of the columns include a spring for this purpose.

The wind bracing follows the bicycle wheel pattern, and an under-tension system stabilizes the roof against rocking.

The main purlin includes a tension belt (150 mm diameter full bar), able to support a tension of 300 tons, while the central ring supports 1000 Tons in compression. The sunshade layer has been designed to minimize the sun penetration in summer at 12 am and maximize it for the morning in winter.
